So timely for me! Thank you, because I asked the same questuons. I find myself using AI to expand upon and put flesh on the bones of my epic idea. Otherwise, it would take me months and years that I do not have. I also use it as a foil, a critic, research assistant and editor. But I still need to fact check the output and ensure that the wording resonates with my nature.

My husband, a futuristic developer, answers my qualms about using AI as a writing tool with, “Are you worried about using calculators, too?” I think AI could increase the diversity and quality of ideas in the public square. Many people with good ideas go unheard because they can’t write in ways that people will read. My 82-year-old mother is a fount of wisdom with decades of experience in her field that she wants to pass on. Thanks to GPT, she’s started a newsletter she can publish weekly without feeling the need for an editor or writing partner (usually me). The ideas are all hers, things I’ve heard her saying for decades. The world benefits far more from her using AI than not.
